The controversy surrounding mining and transportation rights from the Kodingamali bauxite mine has intensified, with renowned environmentalist Prafulla Samantara and Kodingamali Suraksha Mancha leader Pradeep Bagha questioning the motives behind the opposition to Andhra-based company Pioneer.

Vedanta has long been mining and transporting bauxite with low price from Kodingamali without facing significant opposition. However, recent objections have emerged against Pioneer, a new company willing to purchase bauxite at a higher price per ton. Critics argue that such opposition contradicts the interests of local communities and the protection of natural resources. Samantara and Bagha allege that those protesting Pioneer’s operations are driven by personal agendas rather than genuine environmental or community concerns.

“If the protesters are truly concerned about the environment and the people’s welfare, they should oppose all mining activities, including Vedanta’s,” Bagha stated. He questioned the transparency of the protesting organizations, emphasizing that selective opposition undermines their credibility.

The Kodingamali bauxite mine, managed by the Odisha Mining Corporation, has an agreement with Vedanta for bauxite transportation. Recently, another Andhra-based company entered an agreement with the corporation to supply bauxite at a higher price. However, opposition from certain quarters, reportedly linked to Vedanta’s interests, has sparked heated debate.

Bagha accused some groups of working to safeguard Vedanta’s monopoly and suppress competition. He noted that the Kodingamali Suraksha Mancha supports the right of any company willing to offer better compensation to mine and transport bauxite, stressing the importance of fair competition.

The Suraksha Mancha has held village and community meetings to gather support for allowing companies that pay higher prices to operate. Bagha argued that continuing exclusive support for Vedanta could jeopardize the future of the Kansariguda alumina refinery project. The Mancha submitted a memorandum to the Regional Mining Corporation Officer in Laxmipur, demanding measures to protect the livelihoods of affected communities, ensure local development, safeguard the environment, and create employment opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Mancha criticized those opposing Pioneer for placing corporate interests over community welfare, urging transparency and fair practices. The debate continues to stir discussions across Laxmipur district, as the community questions the rationale behind supporting one company while rejecting another offering better terms.
